Within minutes posts started appearing on the discussion board and there was a lot of "excited" searching going on. The teacher reminded the students to post a one sentence description explaining why the site is an example of teen culture today.
As good examples popped up on the board we pointed them out to students. Things like:
Save Darfur -
Student Quote: "This is a popular and important site among teens because it provides teenagers with information about the genocide in Sudan. It also gives the opportunity to donate money."
Cliff Notes -
Student Quote: "The Cliff Notes website helps students review their books and get further information on books. This also allows for students who don't read the books a chance to get chapter and character analysis."
eBaum' s World (which is blocked at our school)
Student Quote: "This site is a perfect break for students in between during homework. It has funny games and videos to lighten a stressful day."
After class I visited the discussion board and was quite impressed and frankly amazed at the variety and depth of sites the students had chosen. They did need to get a little more specific with their site descriptions and explanation of how the sites reflect a students' world. So I posted more instructions and that's where we will pick up tomorrow in class.
